Baker'S Student Encyclopedia Of Music (3 Volumes)

Baker'S Student Encyclopedia Of Music (3 Volumes)

In three richly illustrated volumes, over 25,000 entries open up a world of musical culture, its terms, musicians, instruments, and genres, all in language students will understand and enjoy reading. Entries cover popular, jazz, and world as well as classical music, to include the artists and the styles students want to know more about, from gamelan and Percy Grainger to Max Roach, R.E.M. and Rachmaninoff. The text maintains the eloquence and humor that have made Baker's the music reference of choice for 100 years, while offering more concise entries appropriate in tone and level for the student reader. Enhanced with over 250 illustrations, interesting facts and timelines, Baker's Student Encyclopedia of Music provides readers of all ages with an easy-to-use reference guide to all things musical. From School Library JournalGr 7 Up-Clear and concise articles on music, musicians, and musical styles from a cappella and Claudio Abbado to the Velvet Underground, Meredith Willson, and Zukunftmusik. While most of the articles are short (50 to 100 words), the essential figures, such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach, are each allotted several pages. These lengthier articles are complemented by time lines of the composers' lives and works, informative sidebars, and portraits. Each of the three volumes contains an eight-page insert of color pictures on a particular theme, such as "Music and Musicians as Portrayed in Art"; "Music Around the World"; and "Popular Performers," which range from Louis Armstrong to Salt `n' Pepa and Shania Twain. Each volume has a comprehensive index. However, there are occasional incongruities, such as not mentioning Leonard Bernstein's opera Trouble in Tahiti in his biography, yet it warrants its own entry. And any music encyclopedia that gives as much room to The Monkees as Thelonious Monk needs to reconsider some of its priorities. While The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (Grove Dictionaries, 1998) still sets the standard in the field, smaller libraries in need of a music encyclopedia will find this a useful addition. The articles are easy to read and cover a broad spectrum of figures and subjects.-Herman Sutter, Saint Agnes Academy, Houston, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information, Inc.Review"An essential resource for all collections, this user-friendly, easy-on-the-eyes set lists 5500 entries arranged alphabetically and covering both classical and popular music and musicians, with key time lines for major composers. A nice introduction to musical terminology is found in Volume 1. A comprehensive index concludes each volume.--Library Journal (April 1, 2000) (Library Journal 20000401)"Baker's has done it again! Living up to its reputation of producing exceptional reference books for musicians, Baker's now offers a three-volume set of music encyclopedias to students. [It is] a great addition to any library...As a writer and musician, I have used numerous music reference books. Finding references that are easy to use, well written and up to date can be a challenge.Baker's Student Encyclopedia of Music is enjoyable to use an easy to navigate. Foreign entries contain word origins, pronunciations, and chain references. Biographical sketches from Mozart to the Beach Boys include photos, timelines, and insightful sidebars. Many famous musical works including operas and Broadway musicals are defined in this text...If you are looking for a new resource for your student library that will not intimidate your students, check out this new work. Who knows...your students may become so intrigued by this insightful reference, they won't want to put it down!"--American Music Teacher (March 2000) (American Music Teacher )"This three-volume work provides extensive coverage of music for students in junior high through college. Using a dictionary arrangement, Ms. Kuhn includes not only musical terms, biographies of classical composers and conductors, and summaries o
