Derevnia's Daughters: Saga of an Alaskan Village

Over 12 years of research has gone into the writing of this book which has developed from story of one man's life to a regional history of one of America's most historically fascinating areas. Born in Missouri, Lola Harvey attended Baker University in Kansas, then moved to Alaska shortly after her marriage to a World War II Navy veteran, who became an Alaskan bush pilot. She has lived on Kodiak Island for nearly four decades, with her life centered on her family and its air-taxi business. She has been involved in civic activities, the performing arts, and volunteer projects. For several years Harvey wrote for the Kodiak Daily Mirror while anchoring local TV newscasts and talk shows. Periods of residence "off the island" were spent at Valdez, working on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Project, and in Anchorage, as secretary to the big game guides and a real estate firm. Harvey returned to Kodiak to write this book. "I call it 'conversational' history," she says, "told in the words of the people who lived it." In addition to her continuing studies of Russian-American and Alaskan history, she is actively involved in the development of the visitor industry in Alaska. She owns and operates Island Terrific Tours, a guided tour service based on Kodiak Island.
