Manuel's Murals
A single-minded journey....Manuel Jesus Ramirez Rodriquez, a passionate nine year old boy from Mexico City, loves to paint murals like his hero, the legendary 20th century Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera. He dreams of the day he will become as famous as Diego Rivera so he can take care of his family and never have to watch his father clean other people's buildings ever again. However, because of this single-minded quest, Manuel learns how his actions can affect the lives of others in ways he never imagined. Manuel takes a solo journey to learn more about Diego Rivera's art, but what he finds is a greater understanding of his own culture. The theme of this picture book revolves around family; however, an appreciation of who we are emerges as colorful as the soul that is Mexico.ReviewManuel s Murals By Jeaninne Escallier Kato, Illustrated by Rachel Smith Manuel is a talented artist who lives with his family in an apartment building in Mexico City. He enjoys hearing stories about his heritage and famous artists who learned to represent their cultures in their art. One day, when Manuel decides to paint the outsides of his apartment building, the landlord comes to tell Manuel that his family is going to be evicted for defacing private property. Manuel is devastated and does not know where his family will go, so he flees in the dead of night, hops onto a bus, and rides to see the murals of Diego Rivera in person. He is struck by their beauty and devises a way to help his family, celebrate his heritage and community, while convincing their landlord to let them stay. Manuel s Murals is written by Jeaninne Escallier Kato, a woman with a diverse, multicultural background who wanted to share her love of Mexico and her appreciation for all different cultures. Kato s vision comes to life with the colorful illustrations of Rachel Smith, who makes the book s pictures as lively and vibrant as Manuel s own murals. This is a wonderful way for children to learn about the Hispanic culture, and it even includes Spanish vocabulary and a glossary in the back. Sophie Sestero --Portland Book ReviewAbout the AuthorJeaninne Escallier Kato is a 33 year veteran California public school teacher with a master's degree in education. She grew up in a multicultural, blended family in Southern California, and is married to a Japanese American. Because of her mother's Hispanic roots, & her father's French Indian blood, diverse cultures have always fascinated her. Manuel was born out of her love for Mexico, a culture that has impacted her life deeply. Jeaninne speaks Spanish and teaches 4th grade in a predominantly Latino school in Northern California, where she also runs a Latino mentoring program. Her passion for the artists, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, inspired this book. Jeaninne spent a whole day sitting in front of Rivera's History of Mexico; murals at the National Palace in Mexico City, absorbing his message, when she heard Diego whisper, Teach the children about their past. This book is a homage to all children who dare to dream.
