Viele Menschen haben Angst vor einem eigenen qualvollen Sterben und frchten ebenso den Verlust naher Angehriger. Als Grund fr diese Befrchtung kann die Skularisierung angefhrt werden, da der christliche Glaube an ein Leben nach dem Tod fr viele Menschen nicht mehr als Trost und Hoffnung dient. Daneben ist aber auch der medizinische Fortschritt einhergehend mit einer zunehmenden Technisierung ein Grund dafr, dass sich das gesellschaftliche Meinungsbild zum Sterbeprozess modifiziert hat. Der Punkt, an dem rzte wie frher sagen konnten, hier ist nichts mehr zu machen' ist nicht mehr klar zu definieren, sondern ist zu einem diffusen Suchen nach weiteren Therapiemglichkeiten geworden. In vielen Fllen bedeutet das Ausreizen von therapeutischen Mglichkeiten jedoch eine Verlngerung des Leidens und Sterbeprozesses. Die unverzichtbaren medizinischen Techniken bringen die Paradoxie mit sich, dass sich der Patient entscheiden muss, ob und wie die Technik in seinem Fall angewendet werden soll. In dieser Arbeit werden zunchst die fr das Verstndnis der Thematik notwendigen Begrifflichkeiten definiert und zugleich juristische Aspekte benannt. Dann sollen exemplarisch die Vorgehensweise der schweizerischen Organisation Exit und die Praxis der aktiven Sterbehilfe in den Niederlanden vorgestellt werden. Um sich der ethischen Kontroverse anzunhern, bedarf es zunchst einer Untersuchung von sozialen Einflussfaktoren, die in der Debatte um Sterbehilfe hufig angefhrt werden. Im Hauptteil der Arbeit erfolgt die ethische Auseinandersetzung mit aktiver Sterbehilfe und Suizidbeihilfe unter Bezugnahme auf die ethischen Werte Autonomie und Menschenwrde.
