Los canales inicos de la membrana celular, como el canal de K+ o el canal de Ca2+ desempean un papel muy importante desde los primeros estadios del desarrollo. De esta manera se plantea la posibilidad no slo de la existencia de canales inicos en la membrana plasmtica de las clulas madre, si no tambin de su posible participacin en el proceso de proliferacin y diferenciacin celular.
