Sie wurde bereits 1987 gestartet und begleitet seitdem ber die Wende und die Vereinigung hinweg den politischen Mentalittswandel bei einer identischen Population junger Ostdeutscher zwischen ihrem 14. und 27. Lebensjahr. Die Publikation dokumentiert zunchst den zunehmenden Verfall des politischen Bewusstseins der Panelmitglieder in der Endzeit der DDR, ihre zunehmende Ablehnung der Politik der SED. Ausfhrlich beschreibt sie den komplizierten Weg dieser jungen Ostdeutschen aus dem Gesellschaftssystem der DDR in das der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, vom DDRBrger zum Bundesbrger. Die Aussagen werden anhand von langjhrigen Zeitreihen, die teilweise bis 1987 bzw. 1990 zurckreichen, sowie von umfangreichen qualitativen Daten (eine Besonderheit der Studie) veranschaulicht.
