The great capture: Annie Leibovitz

The great capture: Annie Leibovitz

Being a photographer means you have to be creative. Creative in the way you place your camera. Creative in your thinking and creative in your capture. Annie Leibovitz is considered to be one of the best modern portrait photographers of the modern era. Her work mainly consists of engaging portraits, celebrities, in particular, capturing them in intimate settings or poses. If you are an aspiring photographer you can study a lot by reading Annie Leibovitz's books or Annie Leibovitz biography which is widely available either at a book store or online.

Annie was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1949. She attended the San Francisco Art School to study painting. During her sophomore year, she traveled to Japan with her mother where she discovered her for taking photographs. When she returned to San Francisco she began attending night classes in photography. She was greatly inspired by the work of Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson. She began holding different jobs but continued to hone her photography skills by spending time on a kibbutz in Israel. Things began to look promising for Annie as she approached Jann Wanner, the founding editor of the Rolling Stones in 1971. Wanner was impressed with Annie’s portfolio and gave Leibovitz her first assignment, to shoot the biggest rock star in the world at that time, John Lennon. Lennon’s black and white portrait graced the cover of the Rolling Stones on January 21, 1971, issue and two years later she became the chief photographer of the magazine. Annie would work for the magazine for 10 years and her intimate photographs of celebrities gave the magazine a distinct look. Her subjects included a host of legendary musicians like Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Patti Smith and she also embarked on a world tour in 1975 with the band, Rolling Stones as their official photographers. One of her many iconic works included black and white portraits of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. In 1980, Annie photographed a nude John Lennon curled around a fully clothed Yoko Ono. Several hours later John was murdered and this photograph ran on the Rolling Stones Lennon commemorative issue. The American Society of Magazine Editors in 2005 named this photo as the best magazine cover in the last 40 years. In 1983 Annie left the Rolling Stones and joined Vanity fair as the first contributing photographer. Since then Leibovitz has shot several A-list celebrities like Demi Moore, Brad Pitt, Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Cruise, Bill Clinton, George W Bush’s cabinet, Scarlett Johannson, Kiera Knightley and many more. Her portraits have widely appeared in many other publications like Vogue, The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker.

Annie Leibovitz is considered as the greatest American Photographer of all time. She could capture the essence and personalities of all her subjects. From veteran celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg to new age sensation like Miley Cyrus, Annie has worked with all of them.
