Occupational Therapy with Children: Understanding Children's Occupations and Enabling Participation

Section one examines children’s roles and occupations incontemporary society at a broad level. Coverage includes thechild’s participation in the family, at school and in thecommunity. This section considers environmental influences onchildhood activities, and highlights children’s changingoccupational time use and the impact this has on health andwellbeing. Section two focuses on childhood as a period ofsignificant development and skill acquisition. This is profiled asa dynamic period for the therapist to encourage occupationalmastery across the spectrum of childhood experience: in play; inself-care; as a student; and beyond the school grounds. Topicalchapters evaluate participation in physical activity and considerthe potential for ‘healthy’ leisure, along with therisk characteristics associated with certain approaches toleisure.
