All About Where

Invites readers to describe pictures from a variety of viewpoints and using a variety of possibilities with the help of descriptive words in the marginsFrom Publishers WeeklyThis newest entry from preschool concept master Hoban is initially more difficult to decode than her previous titles, but persistent parents and kids will find the extra effort worthwhile. In this book-length exploration of the idea "where," Hoban combines a list of prepositions (above, behind, under, against, through, beside, among, below, etc.), on the white vertical borders of the book's first and last interior pages, with 26 smaller, size-graduated pages of her characteristically detailed, colorful photos sandwiched between them. Youngsters are urged to find as many ways as possible to match the concepts with the images. By cautioning that "there is no one answer" for each picture, this inviting and challenging book is open-ended, and can be enjoyed effectively over years of ownership. Ages 2-up.Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.From School Library JournalPreSchool-Grade 2-- Another excellent photo-essay concept book from the prolific Tana Hoban, this one dealing with spatial concepts (on, between, among, over, etc.). The noteworthy formatting is executed in such a manner that looking at the book is almost like playing a game. Fifteen words are printed on the edges of both the first and last pages. These extend beyond the pages of photographs, and readers are encouraged to conceptualize all of the given words for each picture. The clear, colorful photos fairly beg the questions, e.g., is it over her head . . . is it under the bridge, etc. The book has universal appeal, and children are sure to enjoy "competing" with peers (and themselves) to see how many relationships can be spotted in any of the two dozen action-filled photographs. Adult guidance will be needed to help the very youngest with the vocabulary, but once eyes and minds come together between the covers of this book, it will prove to be an intriguing, fun-filled adventure. --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OHCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
