American Sports Poems

A collection of poems on sports, ranging from solo running, hunting, and fighting, to football and baseball from the spectator's point of viewFrom School Library JournalGrade 6-12 A comprehensive collection containing 158 poetry selections from a diverse group, including sportswriter Grantland Rice, novelist Ernest Hemingway, and poet Carl Sandburg. Many are by little-known poets. As a resource this book will be welcome. The poems are arranged by sport and include the familiar team sports as well as individual sports such as skateboarding, ice fishing, skydiving, track, and gymnastics. Another section includes poems written about famous athletes. Particularly interesting is a section describing how some poems came to be written and information about some of the poets. A helpful author, title, and subject index is included. The only fairly comprehensive collection of sports poetry for this age group still in print is Anthology of Sporting Verse (Century Bookbindery, 1981), but as it is a reprint of a 1930 edition it is not as timely.
