In 1935, when she laid aside her palettes and her brushes because of failing eyesight, her paintings that remained were stored away and for twenty years disappeared from public view. There were a few unfinished ones among them. Then, in 1957, when her 100th birthday occurred, some were again brought to light; and the interest shown in them was so overwhelming, and the publicity so impressive, that this book became a necessity in order to acquaint the present generation with the work of this noted artist who was so famous around the turn of the century.
