Servos) GLOBAL SOCIETY: THE WORLD SINCE 1900.Lynn Hollen Lees received her Ph.D. from Harvard University. She is professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania and currently serves as co-director of the Wharton-Penn Lauder Program in International Studies. Her books include The Solidarities of Strangers: The English Poor Laws and the People, 1700-1948 (Cambridge University Press, 1998), The Making of Urban Europe, 1000-1994 (Harvard University Press, 1995), and Exiles of Erin: Irish Migrants in Victorian London (Manchester University Press, 1979), which won the John Ben Snow Prize of the North American Conference on British Studies. She has been president of the Urban History Association and has held Fellowships from the National Endowment of the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Her current research is on the British Empire in Southeast Asia.John W. Servos received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He teaches the history of science and medicine at Amherst College, where he is the Anson D. Morse Professor of History. His book, Physical Chemistry from Ostwald to Pauling: The Making of a Science in America (Princeton University Press, 1990), was awarded the Pfizer Prize of the History of Science Society in 1991. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and currently serves as president of the History of Science Society.
