From School Library Journal Grade 8 Up-January makes a complex subject accessible to teens. Following a history of globalization, he presents the arguments for and against this trend, taking stories from the headlines (for example, the citywide protest against the World Trade Organization in Seattle in 1999) to illustrate the passions surrounding the subject. Much of the book focuses on the last several decades, covering issues such as the Asian monetary crisis, the AIDS crisis, and an analysis of September 11. Source notes are included for each chapter, and a bibliography includes Web sites of related organizations. The list for further reading concludes with a note from the author cautioning readers that they will need to keep current by reading magazines and newspapers as this subject is ever changing. The grainy black-and-white photographs are the weakest part of the presentation.
