King George III (First Book)
A biography of the eighteenth-century British monarch during whose reign the American colonies fought to break away and form an independent nation From School Library Journal Gr 4-6--This biography describes the monarch's childhood with a controlling mother but concentrates on his reign and the men who served as his prime ministers. Besides the American Revolution, King George III faced the Seven Years War, the Napoleonic Wars, and the "Black Hole of Calcutta." According to Green, however, even when faced with all this upheaval, the king's ideas about his times and his rule remained unchanged. He even denied the existence of the Industrial Revolution. The author covers the important moments of his subject's life, but the man is never fully fleshed out. There are a number of quotes in the text, and the book is illustrated with full-color portraits, as well as reproductions. The index is good but the three titles for further reading are all for an older audience. This book lacks the liveliness of Jean Fritz's Can't You Make Them Behave, King George? (Putnam, 1996), but it does provide accurate information in a clear and readable format.Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VACopyright 1998 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
