No & Yes!

Product Description A wickedly funny picture book on how to behave -- aimed at active toddlers everywhere! There are always two very different ways of doing things, or so Marco discovers, as he makes choices throughout his busy toddler day. A simple rhyming text paired with lively, full-color illustrations that reflect the right and wrong message -- with the yes pictures in full color and the no in predominantly monotone! Every parent and toddler will recognize, laugh at, and identify with the scenarios played out in this supremely funny and deceptively simple picture book, which ends by showing that sometimes its okay to break the rules! From Publishers Weekly Martin and Svabic, a husband-and-wife team collaborating on their first book, employ a rambunctious preschooler to illustrate the dos and donts of behavior. On one side of each spread, a vignette captioned NO shows Marco reveling in naughtiness; this is rendered in tones of brown and gray with splashes of color to emphasize the specific transgression. One such picture, for example, finds Marco in his high chair, a bowl of cereal on his head, while his mother uses a plate to shield herself against a flurry of pink splatters. On the facing page, the pictures YES partner is in color; in this example, Marco cheerily chows down with more aplomb (Now, this is how a boy should eat, And afterwards, A SPECIAL TREAT!). Unfortunately, the no scenarios are inevitably more interesting than the yes lessons readers are meant to emulate, and the visuals are something of a turn-off. The colors, harsh to begin with, seem gaudy by contrast to the monochromatic works, while the foreshortened compositions look cramped and overly patterned. Ages 2-up. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal reSchool-Grade 1--The subtitle says it all, and what a heavy-handed guide it is! A large, mostly black-and-white picture framed in black on the left-hand page is labeled NO and depicts a toddler engaged in such inappropriate activities as throwing food on the floor, racing cars around the toilet seat, drawing on the door, or refusing to play with a friend. A matching picture on the facing page is rendered and framed in color and labeled YES, because the youngster is shown amending his actions, that is, eating properly, sitting on the potty, drawing on paper, or sharing games. The text does not always scan well, and sometimes sacrifices accuracy for the sake of rhyme: Hurry, Marco! Time to go./Push your carriage nice and slow. Be gentle, Marco. If you do,/Shell let you stroke her kittens, too! The watercolor illustrations, while sometimes garishly painted, add touches of humor. Father races to work wearing a suit jacket, tie, socks, and boxer shorts covered with hearts. Parents fall asleep on the couch long before young Marco is ready for bed. David Shannons No, David (Scholastic, 1998) is a much more enjoyable treatment of the same subject. Marianne Saccardi, Norwalk Community College, CT Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
