She considers the animals that her friends and relatives have chosen, but they don't suit her. In a cleverly done dream scene, she imagines a whole array of creatures, from the common to the exotic, and awakens with her mind made up. Patty's perfect pet is "friendly, can sleep in her room, and loves to play. Patty picks...a puppy!" The crisp, eye-catching photographs are filled with bold primary colors. A variety of perspectives are utilized, and computer enhancement is employed for the dream scenes. The characters are diverse in gender, ethnicity, and physical ability. Most of the text, which consists of one large-print sentence per page, uses alliteration: "Larry...has a lizard he calls Lucky."
