Std'S: What You Don'T Know Can (Twenty-First Century Medical Library)

From School Library Journal Grade 8 Up-While an up-to-date book for teens on healthy living and lifestyle choices is always welcome, this is a standard series entry. The volume covers chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, HIV AIDS, and genital warts. Symptoms and medical descriptions are straightforward and easy to understand, and healthy lifestyle choices are encouraged. The chapter on herpes contains a list of alternative treatments that might be helpful for some sufferers. Stories of teens and couples dealing with STDs appear throughout. The volume is well organized and covers the subject adequately. However, the design is almost textbook-like with black-and-white drawings of the male and female reproductive systems and gray fact boxes. The short tests to determine the "facts or fiction" of readers' knowledge of or risk of contracting STDs are useful. While report writers will use the book, browsers or casual inquirers may gravitate to more interesting presentations.Jane Halsall, McHenry Public Library District, ILCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. A straight-shooting, concise resource outlines different types of sexually transmitted diseases--such as HIV, herpes, and genital warts--how they are contracted, their symptoms, and their diagnosis and treatment. From Booklist Gr. 6-12. Without being didactic or overly graphic, Yancey shares valuable information about STDs in a tone that honors readers' intelligence while warning them about the sometimes-fatal consequences of sexual activity. In preliminary chapters, she presents several teens who have contracted an STD, briefly explains the male and female reproductive systems, and offers a useful "Rate Your Risk" questionnaire. Subsequent chapters discuss STDs in more detail: chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, HIV/AIDS, genital warts, and hepatitis B. Chapter subheadings, formulated as questions, introduce information on everything from physical symptoms and emotional side effects to diagnosis and treatment. Closing chapters discuss prevention of (emphasizing abstinence) and living with an STD. Yancey also addresses the multifaceted burdens imposed by STDs, including emotional ramifications on the individuals, their partners, and even their offspring. Glossary. Roger LeslieCopyright
