About the Author As a writer and photographer, the late Russell Tinsley was well known in the outdoors field. He was the first outdoor editor of the Austin American Statesman newspaper, a position he held for over 30 years. Russell also wrote numerous books, including Hunting the Whitetail Deer and Fishing Texas. He was the host of an outdoor radio show on KLBJ in Austin and was a contributing editor and founder of the Texas Fish & Game magazine. In 2003, Russell was awarded the Ham Brown Award for exceptional service to the Outdoor Writers Association of America, the highest honor given by the association. Russell held a degree in communications from the University of Texas and was a member of the Air Force ROTC.
