This startling statistic alerts young readers to the unpleasant reality of our land of mounting garbage. How it is removed, where it is taken, and what becomes of it is the timely topic of this book. Also addressed is the importance of researching ways to recycle waste materials. Readers are encouraged to recycle on an individual basis. Only a few recommendations are offered, but thinking of new ideas for disposal and recycling is suggested. Off-shore dumping and medical waste concerns are not specifically detailed here. Main subjects are introduced in bold print and are clarified in the text and in the glossary. Clear full-color photographs balance the one or two paragraphs of text on every page. Showers' Where Does the Garbage Go? (Crowell, 1974) is still an informative introduction to trash disposal and recycling for younger readers. Older students can obtain more information, especially about fresh water usage in waste disposal, from Wastes (Watts, 1986) by Miller and Berry.
