Parents of all ages with children of all ages will appreciate this positive, reassuring, comforting, and fun book. About the Author Lynn P. Clayton is Editor of the Louisiana Baptist Message. He uses his humor, goodnatured teasing of humankind's foibles, and poignant recollections as encouragement to those on the journey of parenting. Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. For a minute, let's consider parents who are divorced and have children living at home. The temptation is great to try to convince the children that the other parent is the bad person. Some parents try to bolster their egos by contradiction the other parent's rules and guidelines. There may even be a sense of victory by making one's wishes reign while the children are in the custody of that parent. But when parents do that sort of thing, they wreak havoc on the children. At least one parent in the divorce needs to recognize the importance of unity in parenting. Children need a good relationship with both parents. That is not possible and may not be wise all the time, but it is something the more mature, stable parent realizes and works toward. No child should have the yoke of duplicity of parental direction forced upon him. Parents are wise to work together in giving their children direction and instruction. Duplicity of guidance and discipline puts a time bomb in the lives of children, but unified guidance and discipline plant a gift with delayed appreciation.
