Mitte der achtziger Jahre begannen erste Bestrebungen, die TnniesForschung zu institutionalisieren, als die FerdinandTnniesGesellschaft e.V. in Kiel und am Institut fr Soziologie der Universitt Hamburg die sptere FerdinandTnniesArbeitsstelle sich der Erschlieung und Frderung des wissenschaftlichen Werkes des Nestors der deutschen Soziologie annahmen. Auf der Grundlage der geleisteten Vorarbeiten wurde eine TnniesGesamtausgabe (TG) in 24 Bnden entworfen. In dieser kritischen Gesamtausgabe werden die verffentlichten authentischen und autorisierten deutschen und fremdsprachigen Texte sowie Werke aus dem Nachlass, sofern sie die Form literarischer Selbstndigkeit haben, aufgenommen. Die ersten 22 Bnde der TG beinhalten die verffentlichten Texte Tnnies', der 23. Band enthlt Schriften aus dem Nachlass, der letzte Band die Gesamtregister und verzeichnisse. Neben den edierten Texten enthalten die Bnde Inhaltsverzeichnis(se), ein Abkrzungs und Siglenverzeichnis, einen Erluterungs und Variantenapparat sowie Personen, Literatur und Sachregister. Der editorische Bericht gibt knappe Auskunft ber die Quellenlage, die Materialbeschaffenheit, den Autorisierungsgrad und die Autorenkorrekturen.
