Ah, the good old days! When the rivers of time flowed slower and local taverns served as public meeting places. Although these 45 fairly true tales could have come from almost any watering hole, most originated in the old Corner Bar in Cable, Wisconsin, a usually quiet village not far from Lake Superior and deep within the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest. While names and some of the particulars have been changed, these stories are based on true events as told to or recalled by James Brakken, Bayfield Countys awardwinning author of historical fiction novels and short stories. So, come on in. Meet the gang. Lift a glass and join the fun. Laugh at the latest jokes or another latenight prank gone awry. Learn more than you might wish to know about the goings on around town or in the only other tavern in the village. These fairly true tales will leave you laughing or shocked or sad or utterly flabbergasted when you learn how clever some patrons of the old Corner Bar can be one minute, yet how dimwitted the next. Visit BadgerValley.com and step into the past in the old Corner Bar. Weve been waiting for you! Note: 6 of these stories are found in James Brakkens other short story collections, Billyboy, the Corner Bar Bear and The Moose & Wilbur P. Dilby. But the remaining thirtynine tales are all new. So what are you waiting for? Grab a copy of this salute to every old Corner Bar and enjoy this journey into days gone by. Press item excerpt: James Brakken, writes factbased stories set long ago in Sawyer, Ashland, Douglas, and Bayfield Counties. The awardwinning author has now completed his 11th title, Fortyfive Fairly True Tales from the Old Corner Bar, an illustrated collection of factbased short stories, now available at Brakkens website, BadgerValley.com. This book has been two years in the making, said Brakken, and although these fairly true tales could have come from almost any Upper Midwest watering hole, most originated at the old Corner Bar in Cable, Wisconsin, my hometown. While names and some of the particulars have been changed, all of these stories are based on true events and real people. Fortyfive Fairly True Tales from the Old Corner Bar is Brakkens third collection of short stories from the old days up north. It follows The Moose and Wilbur P. Dilby (2015), Billyboy, the Corner Bar Bear (2016). Together, these three books contain 113 of Brakkens north country tales. Most are humorous, a few are sad and several are shocking. My stories include a wide range of northland characters including, game wardens, gangsters, constables and crooks, youngsters and oldsters, wise guys and schnooks, said Brakken, along with many other fascinating northland characters. Brakkens first novel, The Treasure of Namakagon, (2012), won 2nd place out of 10,000 worldwide entries in the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. Brakken also received the 2013, 2014, and 2016 Lake Superior Writers Award and the coveted Wisconsin Writers Association Jade Ring for his short story collection, The Moose and Wilbur P. Dilby plus 36 Fairly True Tales from Up North (2015). Most of Brakkens short stories take place between Hayward and Lake Superior anywhere from 1880 to 1960. Excerpts from some of these stories and Brakkens other books can be found at his BadgerValley.com website.
