L'importance de l'emblme (genre multimdia et paneuropen) comme reflet de la culture europenne aux seizime et dixseptime sicles est aujourd'hui de plus en plus reconnue. Bien que le style emblmatique se manifeste dans plusieurs arts plastiques (parmi lesquels la peinture, la broderie, l'architecture permanente ou phmre et l'art spulcral) ce sont les livres qui codifient et concrtisent le mieux la combinaison de mots et d'image qui constitue l'emblme.La contribution franaise aux livres d'emblmes fut formatrice et centrale. La bibliographie prsente dcrit en dtail plus de 700 ditions imprimes en France ou en franais entre 1534 et 1700.Alciat, fondateur du genre, reprsente presque un dixime de cellesci, et plusieurs ditions de son oeuvre sont identifies ici pour la premire fois, de mme que plusieurs ditions galement inconnues d'autres auteurs de livres d'emblmes. Chaque notice comporte une reproduction du titre, une collation technique dtaille, une description de la disposition (souvent accompagne d'une illustration) et une liste d'exemplaires identifis. Les diffrentes ditions ont t soigneusement isoles, ainsi qu' l'intrieur de cellesci les diffrents tats et missions. 77 bibliothques ont t dpouilles et, en plus, d'autres exemplaires sont nots dans environ 300 autres bibliothques.
