One day she gave me the most important homework assignment of my life. She told the class that no prayer has meaning unless you understand it in your heart. She asked us to rewrite The Our Father in our own words. I dont remember what I handed in scrawled on widelined yellow paper, but I never forgot the message of her lesson. Somewhere between school and manhood I lost my connection with Jesus. I kept my belief in God the Father, but the story of His having a son seemed just a clever scheme by stuffy old men to control the lives of others. At one of the low points in my life I promised The Father that if He would take my pain I would give Him a biography of the most famous of His children. Id make it a strange work that would create a sense of curiosity and wonder as to what would happen next, one where the reader could care about the characters as people with problems and desires and not just long dead plaster saints mouthing high sounding platitudes. This is my attempt at making good on the debt with the Good Book. This is a highly researched work of fiction.
