Nigeria is Africas most populous country and the worlds eighth largest oil producer, but its success has been undermined in recent decades by ethnic and religious conflict, political instability, rampant official corruption and an ailing economy. Toyin Falola, a leading historian intimately acquainted with the region, and Matthew Heaton, who has worked extensively on African science and culture, combine their expertise to explain the context to Nigerias recent troubles through an exploration of its precolonial and colonial past, and its journey from independence to statehood. By examining key themes such as colonialism, religion, slavery, nationalism and the economy, the authors show how Nigerias history has been swayed by the vicissitudes of the world around it, and how Nigerians have adapted to meet these challenges. This book offers a unique portrayal of a resilient people living in a country with immense, but unrealized, potential.

I was hoping for more of a narrative story, but 'A History of Nigeria' reads more like a textbook. It’s informative, just not very engaging for casual readers. Good for academics, though!

Good, but some parts were dense
This book is very informative, but I found certain sections a bit heavy. It’s great for research, though. If you want to dive deep into Nigeria's past, this is solid — just be prepared to take your time with some chapters.

A bit hard to follow sometimes
I have a keen interest in African history, but I struggled with some of the narrative in 'A History of Nigeria.' It jumps around a lot, making it a bit difficult to keep track. Still, the facts are rich and enlightening!

Excellent overview of Nigeria's past
This book gives a great overview of Nigeria's history from various perspectives. The author has done a remarkable job of compiling facts. It’s a bit heavy, but it's worth the read if you’re serious about understanding the country’s history!

Incredibly detailed history!
I picked up 'A History of Nigeria' for my history class, and it's packed with so much information. The way it covers various eras is impressive and really helps understand the context of Nigeria's development. A must-have for students!
