A House of Branches was Janisse Ray's first booklength collection of poetry. Originally published in 2010 by Wind Publications of Kentucky, the book went out of print upon the death of the publisher, Charlie Hughes, in 2018. This is a stunning collection of ecopoetry that explores wilderness, nature, and the borderland between spirit and wildness. In one poem the author wonders what she should do when she comes upon a wounded kingfisher on a sidewalk. 'Give it back, all of it' she writes, 'and go home.' North Carolina's poet laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer said of A House of Branches, 'These poems are about waking up, looking around at the world, and discovering how to live within it.' Ray is the author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, an awardwinning memoir about growing up in the south, the land of the endangered longleaf pine.
