Written in an accessible style, making use of extensive case material, this valuable book demonstrates how to use a map and compass in clinical work, how to find ones bearings and maintain ones course. Here you will learn how the data of clinical psychiatry are gathered and then shaped from the first crude map of unknown territory into a working clinical formulation, the first organizing principle of therapy. Here you will also learn how to take the clinical situation, the facetoface encounter between patient and therapist, and break that seamless experience into its parts. The author walks the reader through the therapeutic process and discusses how each piece of data (first data, first meeting, mental status, transference, countertransference, resistance, defense mechanisms, history) must be examined with regard to its origin, meaning, direction, and strength.
⚠️ WARNING (California Proposition 65):
This product may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer,
birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
I hoped this would be more practical for everyday therapy situations but it leaned heavily on theories. If you're looking for hands-on advice, this might not be the best fit. That said, it's definitely insightful for academic purposes.

A bit dense for my taste
While I think the ideas presented in this book are valuable, I found the writing a little hard to digest at times. It’s packed with information but could have used simpler explanations. Still, worth a read if you're into psychology.
