This anthology is an example of the most fundamental of three lines of inquiry...a compilation of historical papers whose individual publications were widely scattered in time. About a third of the book's articles present the autobiographical reminiscences of prominent film pioneers. The reset of the anthology is devoted to historical studies which were prepared by engineers and scholars. All of the articles are concerned with the technology of the media; all were originally published in the 'Journal of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.'
