The Tract in the Mongolian language that Bawden examines was printed especially for the missionaries of the London Missionary Society who were active among the Buryat Mongols of Siberia between 1818 and 1847. He told the story of that mission in Shamans, Lamas, and Evangelicals: The English Missionaries in Siberia (1985 Routledge and Kegan Paul), and places the document in the context of the mission and the Society's work generally. He discusses the mission itself, describes the composition of the tract in Kalmuch and subsequent translation into Mongolian, and analyzes and evaluates it. Then he presents a transliteration of the text, an English translation, and a facsimile of the single surviving copy. Relevant excerpts from journals of missionaries published in the Society's internal quarterly are appended. There is no index. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
