La ltima mitad del siglo veinte supuso la transformacin radical del sistema agrario tradicional existente en la mayor parte de las regiones europeas. En el caso de Galicia supuso la desaparicin de una agricultura de carcter familiar y fuertemente integrada en el territorio, y su sustitucin por un sistema especializado en la ganadera de leche, altamente mecanizado. En el transcurso de este proceso una parte de las tierras anteriormente utilizadas para la agricultura o ganadera dejaron de serlo y fueron ocupadas por matorral o arbolado, un cambio del que se derivan importantes consecuencias de tipo econmico, ambiental y paisajstico. Este trabajo se aproxima a los cambios ocurridos en la cubierta del suelo, con especial atencin al abandono de la actividad agrcola y ganadera, que tuvieron lugar en Galicia durante el perodo comprendido entre 1956 y 2004, mediante una revisin inicial de los datos disponibles para toda la comunidad y a contiuacin a travs de un estudio de caso en la comarca lucense de A Terra Ch basado en la utilizacin de fotografa area histrica, modelos estadsticos y sistemas de ayuda a la decisin para la ordenacin territorial.
