Abdala constituye la primera obra de teatro escrita por Mart cuando an no haba cumplido diecisis aos. Se public el 23 de enero de 1869 en el primer y nico nmero del peridico La Patria Libre, creado por l. Abdala es una obra de teatro de referencia en el independentismo de Cuba y uno de los textos clave del modernismo. La obra transcurre en Nubia, regin de Sudn al sur de Egipto. Nubia es vctima del ataque de un feroz y poderoso conquistador que quiere someterla. En la primera escena un senador le comenta a Abdala que su tierra est en peligro tras la llegada de un conquistador. Ante la terrible noticia el protagonista responde con firmeza: Pues decidle al tirano que en la Nubia Hay un hroe por veinte de sus lanzas Abdala, joven jefe del ejrcito, sale a defender su tierra y muere en combate. Antes trata de convencer a su madre, que no cree que l deba sacrificar su vida y abandonarla a ella. Las ocho escenas que constituyen la pieza estn escritas en endecaslabos introducidos por una dedicatoria de clara intencin: Escrito expresamente para La Patria.
