Il n'est donc pas permis a un historien des idees s'efforcanr de comprendre la philosophie de Spinoza de negliger un tel ouvrage. A une epoque ou, pour eclairer la pensee d'un auteur, on va parfois chercher ses moindres brouillons, comment un Traite, non acheve sans doute, mais mis en forme jusqu'au trentetroisieme chapitre pourraitil demeurer inconnu de presque tous? A vrai dire, cela serait d'autant plus regrettable que l'on attache aujourd'hui, avec raison, la plus grande importance au rapport de la philosophie de Spinoza et de la tradition juive. Comment alors ne pas s'interroger sur ce que Spinoza a pense de la langue dans laquelle cette tradition lui a ete transmise? D'autre part, les philosophes contemporains accordent de plus en plus d'interet au probleme du langage. Estil possible de neglier les pages que Spinoza a consacrees a un tel sujet?
