Es conocido a nivel mundial que el nmero de casos de cncer aumenta de manera rpida y progresiva. En Colombia, los incrementos en las tasas de incidencia y mortalidad para la mayora de tipos de cncer lo definen como un problema creciente de salud pblica que se ubica como la tercera causa de muerte en el pas, despus de la violencia y las enfermedades cardiovasculares. Esto exige establecer tratamientos efectivos para su erradicacin. La llamada terapia fotodinmica, usando agentes fotosensibilizadores de naturaleza semiconductora y con tamao nanomtrico, est siendo explorada actualmente por su particular efecto fototxico, en diversos sistemas biolgicos. La fotocatlisis con TiO2 es una opcin viable para el tratamiento alternativo del cncer debido a que presenta una alta citotoxicidad, en presencia de sistemas cancergenos, cuando se le hace incidir radiacin UVA. Por esta razn es necesario evaluar la influencia del tamao, estructura y concentracin de las nanopartculas de TiO2 sobre su efecto fototxico, esto para entender mejor los mecanismos de toxicidad involucrados y poder abordar el tema de tratamiento contra el cncer utilizando fotocatlisis heterognea.
