En 1990, a l'initiative du Professeur Hans Andersson, un premier colloque regroupant des enseignants d'archeologie medievale en Europe a eu lieu a l'universite de Lund (Suede). Un second colloque a ete organise a Budapest (Hongrie) par les Professeurs Andreas Kubinyi et Jozsef Laszlovszky en 1993. Ces deux premiers colloques ont reuni des archeologues enseignant dans de nombreuses universites europeennes. Le troisieme colloque a eu lieu a Caen (France), berceau de l'archeologie medievale depuis Arcisse de Caumont au XIXe siecle jusqu'a Michel de Bouard qui crea en 1955 le Centre de Recherches Archeologiques Medievales de l'Universite de Caen, en 1962 les colloques de castellologie ' Chateau Gaillard ' et en 1971, la revue ' Archeologie Medievale .' Ces institutions et ces publications, parfaitement vivantes, ont servi de base a l'organisation du 3e colloque et a la publication des Actes. Le colloque de Caen comprenait deux parties: une partie reservee a l'enseignement de l'archeologie medievale dans les differentes universites europeennes (contenu de l'enseignement et methode), une autre partie destinee a faire le point notamment sur des problemes archeologiques et historiques relatifs au peuplement, habitat, origine des villages et paroisses, cimetiere et anthropologie.
