Actors Encyclopedia of Dialects is the most authoritative thorough specific dialect instruction book ever. It is designed for actors and acting students by a major dialect actor/director/coach. It covers Europe, the Pacific, the Caribbean, much of South America, India and more. Featured are 136 different dialects and English language varieties, Spanish (American and European), German, Austrian, Italian, Polish, Yiddish, Russian, Lithuanian, Swedish, Norwegian, French, Belgian, Czechoslovakian, Yugoslavian, Hungarian, Finnish, Greek, Indian, West Indian, Portuguese, Brazilian, and more. Includes easytofollow symbols and has guide pages that reveal the nuances of regional variations and related dialects in addition to standard speech. It tells where you can hear each dialect spoken, in films as well as everyday life. If you want to expand your acting range, broaden your employment possibilities and rise above the competition, this book is the one you have been looking for.

I bought this for my son who's in a local theater group. He loves practicing different accents, and this book provides clear guidance. The layout is nice too, though we had to order it twice because the first copy arrived damaged!

A Must-Have for Aspiring Actors
This encyclopedia really opened my eyes to the nuances of different dialects. The sections are easy to navigate and packed with great examples. As a drama student, it’s been super helpful for my character work!

Disappointed with the Content
Honestly, I expected way more from this encyclopedia. The information seemed surface-level and not very engaging. I think there are better resources out there for learning dialects. Not worth the price in my opinion.

Good Resource but Not Comprehensive
While I found the book insightful and useful, it could have included more dialects. Some were definitely lacking detail. It’s still a good starting point, but I wish there were more examples.
