La comprensin, el procesamiento y la identificacin de afijos forman parte importante del vocabulario y conocimiento lxico de los hablantes de una lengua. El conocimiento de afijos de una lengua facilita la lectura e identificacin de palabras nuevas, lo que a su vez incrementa el vocabulario y el conocimiento morfolgico de la misma. Sin embargo, el proceso mediante el cual ste conocimiento se desarrolla no ha sido estudiado a profundidad. Comprender y analizar la formacin del conocimiento sobre afijos tanto en L1 como en L2 es de gran importancia para los investigadores y docentes de lengua debido a que facilita la comprensin sobre el proceso de adquisicin de vocabulario y permite determinar el papel que la identificacin de afijos desempea dentro de las habilidades lingsticas generales de los aprendices. Esta investigacin estudia la relacin entre el tamao de vocabulario de los estudiantes de L2 y su conocimiento de afijos y establece un orden de adquisicin de los mismos.
