Es indudable que la adquisicin, as como la retencin de vocabulario tanto a corto como a largo plazo, es el pilar bsico no slo del aprendizaje del resto de componentes que forman parte de una lengua sino, tambin, de la comprensin y expresin tanto oral como escrita. Por tanto, nuestro propsito con la presente investigacin consiste bsicamente en comprobar que el uso de una ayuda de tipo multimedia, bien estructurada, puede favorecer la comprensin textual, la asimilacin lxica en mayor grado a como lo hacen las actividades tradicionales, basadas en textos escritos, diccionarios y ejercicios. Con el fin de comprobar esta hiptesis inicial, llevamos a cabo una investigacin exhaustiva que ha compaginado desde sus orgenes, teora, prctica, anlisis y experimentacin. Para ello, analizamos todas aquellas teoras lingsticas sobre la adquisicin de una segunda lengua y de su vocabulario, as como revisamos algunas de las experiencias llevadas a cabo con ELAO y el uso de multimedia. En una segunda fase, diseamos nuestras propias actividades con las que experimentamos de forma cientfica, para comprobar los resultados y los beneficios de la multimedia en EFL y ESL.
