Eduardo Calvario persigue dos propsitos fundamentales. Mostrar los daos a la salud por medio de la construccin de un perfil epidemiolgico de los habitantes de la regin de la Costa de Hermosillo, poniendo especial atencin en la variable sexo. Adems analiza las prcticas y discursos de los varones en torno a lo que se ha llamado contruccin social de la masculinidad, y cmo es que sta influye en los riesgos y peligros a que se enfrentan los jornaleros de esta regin. La fraseaguantate como hombre! es reflejo de las imposiciones sociales que experimentan los varones para encarar las situaciones que ponen en jaque su integridad fsica o la de los dems.
