Jos Mara lvarez naci en Cartagena el 31 de mayo de 1942. Es licenciado en Historia y tambin curs estudios de Filosofa y Geografa. Su vida ha estado dedicada a la literatura y al arte. Ha viajado por todo el mundo dando conferencias y lecturas de sus poemas, form parte de la antologa Nueve Novsimos y su obra potica va componiendo su monumental Museo de Cera de la que la ltima entrega ha sido La lgrima de Ahab. Ganador de numerosos premios fue finalista del Premio Planeta con Al Sur de Macao, Premio Internacional de Poesa Barcarola, en 1991 fue finalista del premio Sonrisa Vertical con su novela La caza del zorro, y al ao siguiente gan dicho premio con La esclava instruida. En 1992 recibi el galardn de la Fundacin Borges. Es Doctor Honoris Causa por Dowling (New York) por el conjunto de su obra. En 1998 recibi el premio internacional de poesa Loewe, y en 2001 ha sido nombrado acadmico de la World Poetry Academiy
