Personne, ce jour, ne pouvait cependant en mesurer l'importance, car ce texte s'tait, croyaiton, jamais perdu. Il a fallu qu'un providentiel concours de circonstances permette d'en dcouvrir une version dans l'hritage de Madame ManteProust, et c'est ce texte qui est ici publi. Les proustiens y apprendront, avec motion, que Proust luimme souhaitait que la dernire version de son Albertine disparue ft plus brve, plus dense que celle dont on disposait jusqu' prsent. Par quelques retouches, ajouts, retraits, il inflchissait le sens du livre en y injectant ces "atomes de vrit" qui, eux seuls, accroissent la rigueur d'une composition dont la splendeur prend ainsi son profil dfinitif. En 1925, son frre, le chirurgien Robert Proust, n'avait pas voulu diter cette "vraie" Albertine disparue. De cette prudence, comprhensible dans le contexte d'alors, il tait temps de s'manciper et de livrer, enfin, une avide postrit, l'ultime forme d'un chefd'oeuvre.Cette dition d'Albertine disparue a t tablie par Nathalie Mauriac, arrirepetitefille de Robert Proust, avec la collaboration d'Etienne Wolff.
