"Knnten Sie nicht ein Buch ber da8 schreiben, was in den Lehrbchern nicht drinsteht ~" So fragten mich einige Studenten, als ich 1946 nach achtjhriger, unfreiwilliger Pause zum erstenmal wieder die allgemeine Ein leitung zur physiologischen Hauptvorlesung beendet hatte. Aus dieser An regung erwuchs dies kleine Buch! Eigentlich trug ich mich mit der Absicht, eine allgemeine Physiologie zu schreiben, schon vor einem halben Jahrhundert: Als jungem Studenten drckte mir nmlich der Hirnanatom LUDWIG EDINGER die damals eben erschienene erste Auflage von MAx V ERWORNs bekanntem Buch "Allge meine Physiologie" in die Hand und sagte: "Das ist die wahre Physiologie!" Ich las das Buch mit Begeisterung, aber doch nicht ganz ohne Widerspruch. Selber eine allgemeine Physiologie nach meinen Ideen zu schreiben, verschob ich vernnftigerweise auf ein reiferes Alter. Jetzt, wo ich keine Pflichten mehr habe, fand ich die Zeit dazu. Als dann Herr Dr. SPRINGER bereitwillig auf meinen Plan einging, begann ich mit der Arbeit. Das jetzt fertig vorliegende Buch richtet sich nicht nur an junge Medi ziner, die ber die Grenzen ihres zuknftigen Berufs hinausschauen wollen, sondern auch an Naturwissenschaftler, soweit sie ein Interesse an der be lebten Natur nehmen. Um auch den Angehrigen der Nachbarfcher verstndlich zu sein, muten Dinge kurz erklrt werden, die dem Mediziner lind Zoologen gelufig, dem Botaniker, Chemiker und Physiker aber ziemlich fremd sind. Auch das Umgekehrte kann der Fall sein. Diese Erlu terungen sind meist in Kleindruck gesetzt. Die Anmerknngen bringen vorzugsweise Einzel heiten, die zum Verstndnis des Haupttextes nicht notwendig erscheinen.
