Ein erstes Kapitel iiber die 'Probleme der gegenwiirtigen Alternsforschung' (G. HOLLE, Leipzig) gibt eine problemkritische Einfiihrung in die Definitions schwierigkeiten und Methoden der Alternsforschung und geht nach einer Ein schiitzung des Wertes von 'Alterstheorien' besonders auf die Beziehungen zwi schen Altern und Krankheit ein. Ein besonders ausfiihrlicher Abschnitt ist ferner dem Altern auf verschiedenen Organisationsstufen des Lebens gewidmet, da sich immer mehr zeigt, daB einfache celluliire Modelle den Verhiiltnissen im komplexen Siiugetierorganismus nicht voll gerecht werden. Da die groBe Zahl von 'Alterstheorien' bzw.hypothesen die gegenwiirtige Unabgeschlossenheit der Forschung und die Denkrichtungen verschiedener Schu len besonders verdeutIicht, werden im zweiten Kapitel (D. SCHLETTWEINGSELL, Basel) die noch bedeutsamen Theorien im Zusammenhang und unter Heraus arbeitung ihrer charakteristischen Merkmale dargestellt. Gleichzeitig wird, der Arbeitsrichtung der Verfasserin entsprechend, die Vernetzungstheorie besonders in den V ordergrund geriickt.
