Viele Gesellschaften regeln den Zugang zum politischen System auch uber das Alter der Akteure. Mindestalter sind fur aktives wie passives Wahlrecht die Regel. Auch die Chance des Einzelnen, innerhalb des politischen Systems Interessen durchzusetzen, ist nicht selten durch das Lebensalter bestimmt. Die Studie untersucht die Bedeutung altersbedingter Partizipationsbeschrankungen als ein Instrument der In und Exklusion in den politischen Systemen des klassischen Athen, Spartas und der romischen Republik. Neben der Rekonstruktion von Altersgrenzen und deren Entwicklung wird gefragt, welche Eigenschaften man den Angehorigen einzelner Altersstufen zuschrieb und welche Strukturen fur die empirisch feststellbaren Altersgrenzen und konzepte verantwortlich zu machen sind. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt den Wechselwirkungen zwischen politischem System und anderen gesellschaftlichen Teilbereichen wie Familie, Erziehung, Wirtschaft, Militar oder Religion. Es wird untersucht, inwieweit die Alterskonzepte des politischen Raumes durch dessen Umwelt prafiguriert wurden und unter welchen Bedingungen und mit welchen Folgen die Eigenlogik des Politischen uber Partizipationschancen entschied.
