Altobello Melone freskierte im Langhausmittelschiff des heimatlichen Domes von Cremona, 1517 und 1518, in zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Auftrgen insgesamt sieben Szenen eines weitlufigen, neutestamentarischen Bilderzyklus. Sie sind die einzigen signierten und datierten Werke im Schaffen des Malers, das in der vorliegenden Arbeit in Bezug zur transalpinen Kunst gesetzt wird. Zunchst orientierte sich Melone vorwiegend an seinen norditalienischen Knstlerkollegen; whrend des zweiten Auftrages nahm hingegen die Adaption transalpiner Bildelemente aus druckgraphischen Blttern und gemalten lbildern sukzessive zu. Bedingt durch den Ausbau der Verkehrs und Transportwege zwischen Nordeuropa und Oberitalien erfuhr die allgemeine Handels und Reisettigkeit von Knstlern und ihren bildnerischen Erzeugnissen zu Beginn der Neuzeit einen enormen Aufschwung. Die Lagunenstadt Venedig schien dabei als Hauptanlaufstelle fr aus und inlndische Meister eine besondere Rolle einzunehmen. Von dort ausgehend, verbreiteten sich die Bildideen der lokalen, aber auch der deutschen und niederlndischen Knstlergren weiter in den Westen und Sden des Landes bis sie schlielich in Altobello Melones Reichweite gelangten.
