This book is about law and society in America. Its purpose is to provide social science students with an understanding of the law, of the legal system, and of how, looking at the general in the particular, the principles of law may be applied to the whole of society as well as to the individual as a part. Moreover, the intent is to present the foundations of morality as embodied within the U.S. Constitution, in its philosophical underpinnings within the U.S. common law system, and also to provide a set of guidelines for ethical decisionmaking.As implied in the title, the focus is in the three areas: first, the legal and judicial system in the United States: second, the morality undergirding law and society in America: and third, its evolutionary history and development. These three subjects are approached in the text in reverse order, and assembled in four rather than just three parts, with the fourth area looking at the responsibilities and obligations of the government and its citizens within the social contract agreement.
