From Booklist Written in an easytounderstand manner by a professor of history at Virginia Polytechnic Institute,American Scientists provides nearly 300 entries on influential scientists in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics, botany, geology and geophysics, medicine and physiology, chemistry, and physics. Each entry includes a page or two of text covering the scientist's background, including details about the person's professional career and accomplishments within the scientific world and concluding with a short list of citations for further reading. Also included are some blackandwhite photographs, a short bibliography, a list of the entries by scientific discipline, a list of the entrants by date of birth, and an extensive index. The author doesn't explain how he chose the persons included, but among those profiled are Rachel Carson, George Washington Carver, Edwin Hubble, Linus Pauling, and James Van Allen. Information on many of the scientists included here is easy to find. But most other works on scientists are international in scope, and some are narrowly focused on women scientists or scientists in specific disciplines. American Scientists is recommended for highschool and public libraries as well as undergraduate collections in need of basic biographical information on American scientists.
