Im Kontext des amerikanischen ReeducationProgrammes und den damit verbundenen Bemhungen um eine inhaltliche und institutionelle Neuausrichtung der Universitten entstand nach 1945 eine neue Art der "Amerikakunde". In ihrer Orientierung am Modell "Amerika" erschien sie neben der Soziologie und Politikwissenschaft als ein besonders geeignetes Instrument zur Erneuerung der Hochschulen und der politischen Kultur im Nachkriegsdeutschland. Whrend die amerikanischen Militrbehrden noch bis Anfang der 50er Jahre weitreichende Erwartungen in die Etablierung der American Studies als einer "Demokratiewissenschaft" setzten, wurde die Diskussion ber Amerikastudien auf deutscher Seite von Anfang an kontrovers gefhrt. Ein Verstndnis der inneruniversitren Reformbestrebungen dieser Zeit ist nur mglich, wenn man die Grndungsgeschichte der Amerikawissenschaft an Universitten der damaligen USBesatzungszone nachzeichnet und in ihrer jeweils besonderen konzeptionellen und organisatorischen Ausprgung erfat. Das Buch zeichnet die Geschichte und Kontroversen nach und zeigt, wie hier die Weichen in der Begegnung zwischen Deutschland und Amerikagestellt wurden.
