AS HEARD ON BBC RADIO 4 BOOK AT BEDTIMEA book that can be read in two hours, but will linger in the mind for decades. Sunday TelegraphOnce an officer in the Irish War for Independence, Moran is now a widower, eking out a living on a small farm where he raises his two sons and three daughters. Adrift from the structure and security of the military, he keeps control by binding his family close to him. But as his children grow older and seek independence, and as the passing years bring with them bewildering change, Moran struggles to find a balance between love and tyranny. One of the greatest writers of our era. Hilary Mantel John McGahern is the Irish novelist everyone should read. Colm T?ib?nA masterpiece. John BanvilleMcGahern brings us that tonic gift of the best fiction, the sense of truth the sense of transparency that permits us to see imaginary lives more clearly than we see our own. John Updike

I really enjoyed 'Amongst Women.' McGahern has a way of making you feel connected to the characters, especially the complexities of their lives. I found myself reflecting on my own relationships while reading. Highly recommend for a thoughtful read!

A Deep Dive into Everyday Life
This book by John McGahern really captures the essence of women's experiences in Ireland. His writing is so evocative, I felt like I was walking alongside the characters. Definitely going to read more of his work!

A Mixed Bag for Sure
While I appreciate McGahern's talent, I found the pacing uneven. Some chapters really drew me in while others felt like a slog. Still, there are some gems in the narrative that made it worthwhile. Just keep your expectations in check!

Beautifully Written but Slow at Times
McGahern's prose is stunning, but I found some parts dragged on a bit. I appreciate the depth of the characters though and the way he portrays their struggles and triumphs. Worth the read, just be prepared for a slower pace!

Not What I Expected
I thought this book would be more uplifting, but it delves into some heavy themes. The writing is beautiful, but it’s a bit dark for my taste. I bought it for my book club, but I might not finish it myself. Just not what I was looking for right now.
