Schne fhrt aus, dass die Kerker Szene schon 1772 entstanden sein knnte . Gaier datiert die Entstehung spter, etwa ab Sommer 1773. Im Urfaust' ist die Szene noch in Prosa, der klassische Goethe arbeitete die Szene schlielich in Verse um. In einem Brief vom 5. Mai 1798 schildert er Schiller sein Vorhaben, die Szene umzuarbeiten: Meinen Faust habe ich um ein gutes weiter gebracht. Das alte noch vorrtige hchst konfuse Manuskript ist abgeschrieben und die Teile sind in abgesonderten Lagen, nach den Nummern eines ausfhrlichen Schema's hinter einander gelegt, nun kann ich jeden Augenblick der Stimmung nutzen, um einzelne Teile weiter auszufhren und das ganze frher oder spter zusammen zu stellen. Ein sonderbarer Fall erscheint dabei: Einige tragische Szenen waren in Prosa geschrieben, sie sind durch ihre Natrlichkeit und Strke, in Verhltnis gegen das andere, ganz unertrglich. Ich suche sie deswegen gegenwrtig in Reime zu bringen, da denn die Idee, wie durch einen Flor durchscheint, die unmittelbare Wirkung des ungeheurn Stoffes aber gedmpft wird. Goethe bezweckte also eine Dmpfung des Stoffes mit seiner Umformung, dies trifft sicher auf die KerkerSzene in besonderer Weise zu. In der Sekundrliteratur wird diese Umarbeitung in Lyrik zwar als meisterhaft bezeichnet, es kommt aber auch zum Ausdruck, dass die menschliche Extremsituation im Kerker' kaum lyrisch ausgedrckt werden knne und dadurch mehr als nur eine Dmpfung bewirkt wurde.
