Plants were chosen for their pictorial value, with the intention that each watercolor should evoke a habitat and associations which match those of the quotations accompanying it.The quotations that are included are from a variety of explorers and settlers, describing the plants and reflecting the practical, aesthetic, and botanic interests of the newcomers in different parts of the country.
